Visit to the Rock (Newfoundland)

During the summers of 2022 & 2023 I visited Newfoundland, known as 'The Rock' because of the endless expanses of rocky barrens and rocky coastlines. While there we had opportunities to observe and photograph the iconic Puffins nesting on rocky islands, caribou herds, humpback whales, icebergs and much more. THE ROCK - NEWFOUNDLAND NEWFOUNDLAND'S CARIBOU HERDS We have all seen a caribou, although for most of us it was on the back of a Canadian quarter. These elegant creatures travel in herds throughout the Canadian north. Newfoundland's Avalon Peninsula is where [...]

Escape From the Eye of the Storm

After Hurricane Dorian decimated the Bahamas it swept up the coastal waters of the U.S. and as it did so, it made landfall in North Carolina before churning northwards to our coastline. As the storm's eye passed over the coastline of South and North Carolina birds that had taken shelter from the storm flew from their sheltered places into the clear sky to catch up on their feeding. Sadly, as the trailing wall of the storm closed in on the airborne birds, many were unable to make it to cover. To avoid the deathly winds they were forced to [...]

Yellowstone – North America’s Serengeti

My visit to Yellowstone filled me with inspiration. It truly is North America's Serengeti, a place where herds of wild animals roam free and predators stalk them unhindered. Yellowstone and the Grand Tetons encompass most North American habitats, from the rolling plains to the jagged mountain tops covered year round with snow. Every habitat is home to it's own specific flora and fauna and in Yellowstone ... they thrive! Everywhere you turn, if you're watchful, there's wildlife as it was hundreds of years ago. It's impossible to not be struck with wonder and awe at nature's rugged [...]

Fall Migration

Gadwall Gliding across the gilded water Gadwall's take a respite on a golden pond in their journey south as part of their Fall Migration. They traveled north in the early spring to breed in the fertile ponds and lakes. Now as winter approaches the warmer climes call to them and once again they fly southward to spend the colder months. Greenwing Teal A pair of Greenwing Teal are among the many species of duck that fly to our northern waters to breed. They land in the many lakes and ponds found [...]

Little Blue Heron – Rare Nova Scotian Bird

I love how my Tamron 150-600 MM zoom lens enables me to capture close-ups of my subjects without me having to get too close. Today I photographed my first 'Nova Scotian' little blue heron. I have seen them in Florida and knew they on occasion migrated as far north as Nova Scotia, but actually observing one here, in my home province had eluded me. That changed today, not only did I get to observe one, I was able to photograph him for quite some time. At first, he wasn't very active and as the sun began to [...]

The Birth of a Painting – Encountering the Piping Plover

The Birth of a Painting   ... Further down in this entry, I will detail the process of creating a painting from this encounter.  Last year in late August, I went to one of our beaches where the Piping Plovers like to feed and store up reserves for their long flight down south.  I shortened the legs on my tripod as short as I could, and plunked myself down in the sand, to do some photography. These little birds are so cute and animated that I kept finding myself grinning from ear to ear [...]

Sable Island’s Wild Horses

I Was Lost on Sable Island I was lost on Sable Island ... Not in the traditional sense of the word, but rather lost in the beauty and wonderment of such a place. On August 21st, 2017 I had the rare privilege to visit this island of mystery. As we flew across the endless Atlantic waves, I hoped and prayed that I would be able to spot some of the famed wild horses of Sable. To get there one must board a small aircraft called a Britten Norman Islander which seats only 5 people. Knowing we would be landing [...]

Clever Little Red Fox – The Fast and the Furriest

A Beautiful Red Fox Early on Sunday morning a special visitor appeared in our front yard, a beautiful red fox. An uncommon and wonderful site. She had a well shaped usual fox head and that distinctively furry tail with the patch of white on the end. Definitely a welcome yet unusual site for a Sunday morning. She was very timid as she crept out of the wooded edge of our property. Even though she was very shy she headed towards the center of our front yard with a sense of purpose that seems very natural to an intelligent [...]

The Piping Plover

Lawrencetown and the Piping Plover I live close to Lawrencetown Beach, just outside of Dartmouth, Nova Scotia. For someone who loves wildlife and enjoys nature, this place is paradise. There is a little bird who inhabits our nearby shores, that is very close to my heart, the piping plover. These tiny birds migrate over 2000 kilometers from the Caribbean to Atlantic coastal beaches from Newfoundland to Nova Scotia and southward to North Carolina. Great Egret – Snowy White Visitor

This Great Egret has made a nearby marsh his summer home. Central Nova Scotia is at the northernmost tip of their range, so it's a rare treat to see one close to my home. I ventured out today in hopes of seeing him and was rewarded with an opportunity to observe him actively hunting in the small ponds of Lawrencetown Beach marsh. Please, take a moment and sign my register! Occasionally I have some important news about my adventures or new paintings just completed.  If you would like to hear about them when they happen [...]
